Amazing Healthy Vegan Fried Rice

A Chinese-inspired fried-rice dish without the ‘fried’ aspect. Packed full of vegetable , protein, and fibre. Instead of ordering take-out tonight, try this instead!

If you’ve seen a few of my other recipes you might notice a bit of an obsession with black salt. This isn’t the first time I’ve used it and it wont be the last! Black salt (Kala Namak) give food a sulphury smell and taste that does a really good job at mimicking egg. I use it to coat my scrambled tofu for a copycat scrambled egg.

If you don’t know where to get black salt, this is the brand I get from Amazon: Black Salt Powder (Kala Namak) – 200gm. If I haven’t talked you into trying it yet, I don’t know what will (I’ll just keep trying haha).
Vegan Fried Rice

I use brown rice for this recipe because I like the taste and the extra health benefits it brings (antioxidants, fibre, better heart health). However, you can use any rice you have on hand or that you prefer. I would love to try this with black rice. If anyone has had black fried rice, let me know.

Amazing Healthy Vegan Fried Rice

Chinese inspired Fried Rice.

For this recipe I am using a frozen stir fry vegetable combination, however you can use 500g of your vegetables of choice.


  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 rice wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Chinese wine
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp Sriracha
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp vegetable stock
  • 1/2 cup water
  • a grind of pepper
  • Scrambled Tofu
  • 450g firm tofu, patted dry
  • 1 tsp black salt
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Other
  • 2 stalks green onion
  • 500g stir fry vegetable
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 8 cups cooked brown rice (4 cups uncooked)
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil


Step 1: Prepare the fried rice sauce by combing the sauce ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Leave this until needed.

Step 2: Drain and pat dry the tofu. Crumbled the tofu into small chunks that resemble scrambled egg. Toss the tofu seasonings through it.

Step 3: In a large wok or fry-pan on high heat, add 2 tbsp of sesame oil and green onion. Toss in the scrambled tofu and fry it until heated throughout. Add the stir fry vegetable and toss until cooked.

Step 4: Add the cooked brown rice and the sauce previously made. Fry everything until cooked and the sauce evenly coats everything. Garnish with green onion and sesame seeds.
