The Best Vegan Rice Paper Bacon

I’ve seen a lot of recipes floating around for bacon substitutes, and I’ve tried a few that you can find in stores, but, they’ve never hit the spot for me. I used to eat at least 3 pieces of bacon every morning in an attempt to bulk up and increase my protein intake. 3 years later, I know it was a bit ridiculous, I was upping my protein alongside extreme amounts of cholesterol. But that doesn’t mean I’m still not secretly nostalgic for the breakfasts I used to have. So, here’s my attempt and I have to say, it’s pretty damn good.

I know the recipe says to leave so it can crispen up for a bit more of a crispy bacon texture but the way I love to eat it most is fresh out of the oven. It is so chewy with just a few crispy pieces around the side from the sauce.

Another great aspect of this recipe (aside from the awesome flavour and the easiness of it) is the cost. These racon rashers are so cheap to make, it’s just; rice paper, bbq sauce, maple syrup, and spices.

A cheap and easy replacement for Bacon rashers

The brand of Smokey BBQ sauce I use is Heinz ‘Full Smokey Hickory Flavour’. You can use liquid smoke if you have it just make sure to only use a 1/2 tsp.

Nutritional yeast can be found in all health food store or even a local supermarket chain.


  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp smokey BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 4 sheets rice paper


Step 1: In a small bowl add olive oil, soy sauce, nutritional yeast, BBQ sauce, maple syrup, smoked paprika, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix until fully combined.

Step 2: Place the 2 sheets of rice paper together in a platter of room temperature water so they stick together, leave it in the water till they soften. Once it’s soften place on a chopping board and push out any excess water between the sheets.

Step 3: Cut 2cm wide strips in the rice paper. Using a pastry brush, brush the strips with the sauce. Place on a lined baking tray, sauce side down then, brush the topside with the remaining sauce. Lightly salt and pepper the bacon then bake in an oven at 200C for 10 mins.

Step 4: Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to sit for few minutes to crispen up further.
