I don’t think I’ve seen a single vegan savoury french toast recipe but I was raised with savoury french toast. My childhood french toast was served with tomato sauce, not maple syrup. I was honestly so surprised when I found out that most people eat it sweet. Anyway, I wanted to give savoury a little love.
The hardest part was making this vegan but keeping the taste and the texture but with a bit of experimentation I figure it out.

My childhood french toast was pretty basic; eggs, milk, salt, pepper. Definitely doesn’t cut it now I’m used to cooking with herbs and spices. This recipe is full of flavour; garlic, onion, paprika, etc.

Vegan Savoury French Toast

A delicious savoury breakfast.
Ingredients
- 6 slices wholemeal bread
- 2 cups soy milk
- 2 tbsp ground flax
- 2 tbsp wholemeal flour
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- dash of paprika
- 1 tbsp dried parsley
- 1/4 tsp chilli powder
Directions
Step 1: Add all the ingredients except the bread in a large mixing bowl and whisk to evenly combine. Leave it for 10 minutes to thicken and settle.
Step 2: Grab a piece of bread and dip it into the batter. Be sure to fully cover the slice but to do it as quickly as possible. Too much liquid will make the bread soggy.
Step 3: Put the bread on a medium-high greased pan and cook for 10 minutes on both sides. Enjoy!
